John E.
Hoiles, an Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL), died September 29, 2026, aged 88. Born August 11, 1938, he was also known as Johnny.
Outside football, Hoiles worked as a blacksmith. He began his playing career as a ruckman before moving into defence as a key defender. His defensive role was represented at the 1961 VFL Grand Final, where he played at centre half-back as Footscray faced Hawthorn. The club lost the match. Hoiles’s record included 101 consecutive games, a run that began midway through the 1959 VFL season and continued to the end of the 1964 season. That span bracketed his grand-final appearance, placing the match within a sustained period of selection for Footscray. His career at the club thus included a transition from the ruck to a defensive position, a place in the 1961 decider and an uninterrupted run of appearances across several seasons.
