John Dudley Davies, an English Anglican clergyman, bishop of Shrewsbury and author, died September 23, 2026, aged 99.

Born on August 12, 1927, he served in the Royal Air Force from 1945 to 1948 before studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received a Master of Arts, and Lincoln Theological College. Ordained deacon and priest, Davies began his ministry as curate in Halton, Leeds, then spent several years in Southern Africa, holding posts that included Missionary Director for Empangeni and university chaplain.

He returned to Britain in 1970 to take an administrative position with the Church of England Board of Education. His subsequent appointments included Vicar and University Chaplain at Keele, Principal of Ascension College in Selly Oak, and Diocesan Missioner of St Asaph. Davies became Bishop of Shrewsbury in 1987 and held the office until 1994. His tenure encompassed a change in the nature of the post: with the introduction of area bishops in 1992, the Bishop of Shrewsbury’s position changed from suffragan bishop to area bishop. His career thus spanned parish ministry, church education and diocesan work before and during his episcopal service.
