Born Joseph Anthony McDonald in Staten Island, New York City, he graduated from Fordham University in 1951 and spent decades in Major League Baseball as an administrator, scout and front-office executive. He served as general manager of three MLB clubs between 1975 and 1992, and held prominent positions in the New York Mets organization from 1962 to 1980, including roles in administration, scouting and minor league operations.
McDonald later worked for the St. Louis Cardinals, where he became assistant general manager before taking over as general manager in 1982.
