Battle played guard in professional football after his college career with the Southern Illinois Salukis, and appeared in 14 games for the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Edmonton Eskimos in 1964. Born in Bartow, Florida, he attended Union Academy and later earned a PhD from the University of Alberta in 1972.
After retiring from football, he worked as an educational psychologist for Edmonton Public Schools.
