Jeffrey Goldstone, a British theoretical physicist and academic, died October 12, 2026, aged 93.

Born in Manchester on September 3, 1933, he attended Manchester Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a doctorate in 1958. He worked at the University of Cambridge until 1977 and later became an emeritus physics faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Theoretical Physics.

Goldstone’s research included the theory of nuclear matter, which he studied under Hans Bethe. In 1957, he proved the linked-cluster theorem and developed modifications of Feynman diagrams for non-relativistic many-fermion systems; those diagrams are now known as Goldstone diagrams. He was also noted for the discovery of the Nambu–Goldstone boson, and for work associated with effective action and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm. His honors included the ICTP Dirac Medal, the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics, the Guthrie Medal and Prize, the Faraday Medal and Prize, and the Mayhew Prize. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
