Born Clifton Jackson in March 1947, he grew up in central Kingston and became a prominent session musician on ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and discomix recordings during the 1960s and 1970s. He began playing bass after seeing Lloyd Brevett perform with the Skatalites, and he was also influenced by Motown records, especially the playing of James Jamerson.
Jackson’s early recording work included a 1967 session with producer Duke Reid, when he played on Alton Ellis’s “Girl I’ve Got a Date,” a song later noted for its influence on other recordings.
