Jack Edwin Kirksey, a school principal, probation officer and Michigan politician who served as mayor of Livonia, died October 14, 2026, aged 97.
Born in Atlanta on November 21, 1928, he attended Wayne State University and pursued a career in Michigan public service. Kirksey served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1977 to 1984.
After leaving the legislature, he was assistant Wayne County executive from 1985 to 1987. He later became mayor of Livonia, serving from 1995 to 2003, then returning to the office in 2008 and serving through 2015. His government work thus included state legislative service, county administration and leadership of a Michigan city. The two periods as Livonia mayor were separated by five years, following his earlier service in the House and the county executive’s office. His background also included work in education and probation, occupations recorded alongside his political career. Across these posts, Kirksey held elected positions in the state legislature and Livonia, as well as an administrative role in Wayne County. His public career spanned several decades, from his first years in the House in 1977 to the end of his second mayoral period in 2015.
