Jack Grassel, an American jazz guitarist, teacher and author from Milwaukee, died on August 26, 2026, aged 77, in a traffic collision.

Born in Milwaukee and educated at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Grassel built a career on the jazz scene as a performer and educator. He worked with Rosemary Clooney, Slide Hampton, Stanley Jordan, Ed Thigpen and Nancy Wilson, created the Occupational Music degree program at Milwaukee Area Technical College, and wrote instructional books including Big Ax and Super Ax.

He also formed Frozen Sky Records and devised the SuperAx, an instrument combining guitar and bass guitar strings.
