Berend served as president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1985 to 1990 and was a member of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party’s Central Committee between 1988 and 1989. He moved to Los Angeles in 1990 and continued teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles. His honors included Hungary‘s Kossuth Prize, an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015.
