Widely described as the father of the modern Humanistic Buddhism movement in Taiwan, he was born Lee Kuo-shen in Jiangdu County on August 19, 1927, and became one of the most influential figures in modern Taiwanese Buddhism. Based in Taiwan, he also helped establish the lay Buddhist group Buddha’s Light International Association and was known as a teacher, writer and calligrapher.
His work included the Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts, and he taught at National Taiwan University after studying at the University of Hong Kong. Also known as Master Xingyun and Shi Xingyun, he died in Kaohsiung.
