Henry Lewis Suggs, an American historian, died September 4, 2026, aged 84.

An emeritus professor of history, Suggs was also an author and editor whose work examined African American newspapers and journalists. Born in Winterville, North Carolina, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at North Carolina Central University before receiving a doctorate from the University of Virginia.

His academic career included appointments at Western Carolina University, where he was the first African American faculty member, and Clemson University, where he was the second to become a full professor. Suggs’s research explored the history of African American journalism through studies of newspapers and the people associated with them. He wrote about P. B. Young and the Norfolk Journal and Guide in his book “P. B. Young and the Norfolk Journal and Guide, 1910-1954,” and also authored “P.B. Young, Newspaperman.” His books included a biography of James Edward Shepard, who helped found North Carolina Central University. In addition to his books, Suggs wrote articles on related historical subjects.
