Heinz Dieterich, the German sociologist and political analyst, died on July 18, 2026, aged 82.

Residing in Mexico, he was known for his left-wing outlook and for work that ranged across conflict in Latin America, global society and the ideological disputes of the 20th century. After studying sociology in Frankfurt and Bremen, he moved to Latin America and went on to teach sociology and methodology at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City from 1977.

Over the course of his career, he contributed to several journals and published more than 30 books, and he was also associated with the “New School of Bremen” in sociology. Dieterich helped found the alternative news site Rebelion.org in 1996 and remained linked to its editorial work.
