Heidi Burge, an American basketball player who played for the Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics, died October 6, 2026, aged 54.
Born Heidi Ann Burge, she was also known as Heidi Ann Horton. Her education included Palos Verdes High School and the University of Virginia.
Before she began high school, her family moved to Palos Verdes Estates so she and her twin sister, Heather, could attend Palos Verdes High. Burge was initially more interested in theater and volleyball than basketball, but tried out for the school’s girls’ team after its coach invited her during her freshman year. She quickly took to the game. At five months old, in 1972, she underwent open-heart surgery to remove a second aorta that wrapped around and constricted her windpipe. She had been given a 50-50 chance of survival. Burge played professional basketball overseas from 1993 to 1997, then joined the WNBA, playing for the Sparks and the Washington Mystics from 1997 to 1998. Her career thus included four years of overseas play before her two seasons with the league’s Los Angeles and Washington teams. She was the twin sister of Heather (Burge) Quella.
