Born in 1930, he studied at Yokohama National University, where he later served as a part-time lecturer, and went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Tokyo in 1972 with research on Palaeoloxodon naumanni. His career also included teaching stints at several universities, among them the University of Tokyo, Hiroshima University, Kyoto University, Nagoya University, Shizuoka University and Tohoku University.
