Dorn, an American chemist who spent five decades on the faculty at Virginia Tech, died on August 6, 2026, aged 82. Dorn, whose full name was Harry Conrad Dorn, taught chemistry at the university from 1974 until his retirement in 2024.
In 2025, the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors named him professor emeritus of chemistry. He also served as a professor of radiology at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and as a professor at the Virginia Tech Fralin Biomedical Research Institute from 2012 to 2017. His research focused on fullerenes, fullertubes, metallofullerenes, nanoparticles and the development and applications of nuclear magnetic resonance and dynamic nuclear polarization.
