Born Guy Clyde Conti in Pittsburgh, he studied at Clarion State College, now Clarion University, where he played baseball for one season before returning to earn a degree in 1965. He briefly played catcher in the Houston Astros organization, then moved into coaching, including basketball at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and football at Northwestern High School in Albion, Pennsylvania, during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Conti later held several coaching posts in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor league system. There, he befriended Sandy Koufax and worked with young pitchers including Pedro Martínez and Ismael Valdez. Martínez credited Conti with teaching him English while they were in Great Falls, Montana, and called him “my white daddy.” In the winter of 2004, Conti became one of Willie Randolph’s first hires as Mets manager, joining the major-league staff for the 2005 season as bullpen coach. He later served the club as a senior advisor. His career crossed professional baseball, college athletics and high school coaching, with work ranging from player development in the minors to the Mets’ major-league bullpen.
