Guruvayur Dorai, an Indian percussionist and senior mridangam exponent, died in Mylapore on October 10, 2026, aged 91.

Born Vaidynathan in Guruvayur, Kerala, on July 2, 1935, he became known as an exponent of the Pudukottai style of mridangam, the South Indian classical percussion instrument. His first teachers were Palghat Subba Iyer and E.P.

Narayana Pisharody; he later studied with Palani Subramaniam Pillai, a celebrated master of the instrument. Dorai began performing in concerts at eight, and his career on the concert platform extended for six decades. His work in mridangam and music helped carry the art to audiences around the world. In January 2025, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honor, for his contribution to the arts. His life and career were closely associated with the mridangam, through performance, learning from established teachers and the propagation of its musical traditions. The award recognized his work in a field in which he had performed from childhood and in which he became one of the senior exponents.
