Born on July 16, 1941, in Bordesholm, Germany, he emigrated to the United States with his family in 1954. Stein earned a bachelor’s degree from the General Motors Institute of Technology and later completed a doctorate in electrical engineering at Purdue University.
He spent 50 years at Honeywell and taught as an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for two decades. In 1985, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers named him a fellow for leadership in making modern control theory and its applications practical, and in 1994 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
