Born in Pittsburgh on February 22, 1925, he wrote twenty collections of poetry and four books of essays, and became known for work that earned him the National Book Award for Poetry in 1998 for This Time: New and Selected Poems. Stern studied at the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University, and later taught literature and creative writing at Temple University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Raritan Valley Community College and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
From 2009 until his death, he served as distinguished poet-in-residence in Drew University’s graduate MFA program in poetry.
