Gerald M. Pomper dead at age 91, American political scientist

Gerald M.

Pomper, an American political scientist, died on May 21, 2026. He was 91.

Pomper specialized in American elections and politics and was the Board of Governors Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. Born in The Bronx in 1935 to Jewish immigrants from Poland, he grew up in Manhattan and graduated from Stuyvesant High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1955 and later earned a PhD from Princeton University. Pomper began his academic career at the City College of New York before joining Rutgers, where he served as founding chair of the political science department at Livingston College. He was also a Fulbright scholar from 1971 to 1972 at Tel Aviv University.
