Born in Cusco on December 25, 1930, he was trained as a civil engineer at the National University of Engineering and went on to a long career in public life. A member of Popular Action, he served as the party’s general secretary from 1963 to 1965, then held the development portfolio from 1965 to 1967.
He was elected to the Senate three times and served there from 1980 to 1992. Acurio was also the father of chef Gastón Acurio.
