Gabriel Antonio Camilo González, the Dominican Roman Catholic prelate who served as bishop of La Vega from 1992 to 2015, died on July 17, 2026.

Known as Antonio Camilo, he was born on February 7, 1938, in Salcedo and was later named bishop of La Vega by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1992, during the pope’s visit to the Dominican Republic marking the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. He became the first and only Latin American bishop publicly announced by a pope, and he was consecrated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

After stepping down from the diocese in 2015, he remained bishop emeritus until his death. During his episcopate, he ordained more than 100 priests, both diocesan and religious.
