Friedrich Seifert, a German mineralogist and geophysicist, died on May 7, 2026.
He was 84. Seifert was born in Dresden in 1941, studied mineralogy at the University of Kiel and the University of Zurich, and received his PhD from the University of Zurich in 1966 for work on rock metamorphosis at high temperatures and pressures.
After postdoctoral work at the University of Bochum, he completed a habilitation thesis in 1970. He later became a professor at the University of Bayreuth and was the founding director of the Bayerisches Geoinstitut there. The silicate mineral seifertite is named after him.
