More about Frank Dewane
Born: March 9, 1950.
Frank Dewane, an American Roman Catholic prelate who served as coadjutor bishop and bishop of Venice in Florida, died October 7, 2026, aged 76.
Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on March 9, 1950, he was appointed coadjutor bishop by Pope Benedict XVI on April 25, 2006, to assist Bishop John Nevins. Dewane was consecrated on July 25, 2006, at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, with Nevins as principal consecrator and John Favalora and Diarmuid Martin as co-consecrators.
His episcopal motto, “Iustitia Pax Gaudium,” means “Justice, Peace, and Joy” and is drawn from Romans 14:17. The coadjutor appointment placed Dewane alongside Nevins during the final months of the latter’s episcopate. When Nevins retired on January 19, 2007, Dewane automatically succeeded him, beginning his service as the diocese’s bishop. He held that office until 2026, following his initial period as coadjutor. His appointment and consecration in 2006 marked the start of his formal service in Venice, and his succession the following January began a nearly two-decade episcopate. The transition from coadjutor to bishop thus defined the sequence of his service to the Florida diocese.
