Eusi Kwayana, the Guyanese politician and former member of Parliament, died October 10, 2026, aged 101.

Born Sydney Evanson King in Lusignan, he moved with his family to Buxton at seven and became a primary school teacher at 15. His political activity began at the village level in the 1940s; around 1947, then known as Sydney King, he joined the group led by Cheddi Jagan that founded the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

After the PPP won Guyana’s first election under universal adult suffrage in 1953, Kwayana became Minister of Communication and Works and served as a member of Parliament that year. The British Army detained him in 1954. In 1956, he founded County High School in Buxton and became its principal; it was later renamed Republic Cooperative High School. Kwayana subsequently left the PPP to establish ASCRIA, the African Society for Cultural Relations with Independent Africa, a Pan-Africanist grassroots political group. After a brief association with Forbes Burnham’s People’s National Congress, ASCRIA fused into the Working People’s Alliance. Kwayana returned to Parliament from 1986 to 1990. Alongside his political work, he was a playwright.
