Erling Diesen, the Norwegian engineer and civil servant who directed the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, died on July 3, 2026.
Born on July 6, 1932, in Geithus, he finished secondary school in Hønefoss in 1951 and graduated as a civil engineer from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1956. Diesen worked at the institute as an engineer and research assistant until 1960, then served as secretary of the Norwegian Electrotechnical Committee before joining the Norwegian Water Resources and Electricity Agency in 1961.
He became director-general of the agency in 1987 and, after its reorganization, served as director from 1991 to 1999. He also chaired Norsk energiforening in the Norwegian Polytechnic Society and held positions with the World Energy Council and the Institute for Energy Technology.
