Elia Zenghelis, the Greek architect and teacher, died on August 30, 2026, aged 89.
Born in Athens in 1937, he studied architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, completing his studies in 1961. He then worked for Douglas Stephen and Partners from 1961 to 1971 while also teaching at the Architectural Association from 1963, where he became known for helping bring more radical avant-garde ideas into the curriculum.
Zenghelis later collaborated with architects in London, Paris and New York, and in 1975 he founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture with Zoe Zenghelis, Rem Koolhaas and Madelon Vriesendorp. He was also a partner in charge of OMA London from 1980 to 1987 and of OMA Athens from 1982 to 1987.
