Eduard Maur, a Czech historian, historical demographer and university teacher, died on August 19, 2026, aged 89.
Born in Plzeň on April 1, 1937, he focused on the economic and social history of the early modern period and on historical demography. He studied history and Czech at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, where he remained as a researcher at the Institute of Czechoslovak, later Czech, History.
From 1993 to 2000, he headed the institute and afterwards became an emeritus member. Maur also lectured at the Institute of Historical Sciences at the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the University of Pardubice and spent the 1990s as a visiting professor at several French universities, including Lille, Paris and Montpellier.
