Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1938, he studied at the Regional College of Art in Manchester, now Manchester School of Art, and Clare College at the University of Cambridge. His career brought together architectural practice, university teaching and research.
From 1965 to 1995, he taught and researched in Cambridge University’s Department of Architecture, where he was a founding member and later director of the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies. He then held the Chair of Architectural Design at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, from 1995 to 2002. Between 1982 and 1994, he practised with Stephen Greenberg as Greenberg and Hawkes. The partnership’s projects were widely published, won a number of Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Architecture Awards and were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Venice Biennale. Alongside his architectural work, Hawkes wrote books including The Architect and the Academy (2021), The Environmental Imagination (2019) and Cities’ Identity Through Architecture and Arts (2018), spanning architectural education, environmental thought and the relationship between cities, identity, architecture and the arts.
