He helped engineer the ARPANET, the network that paved the way for the modern internet, and worked on the Interface Message Processor, the packet-switching node that linked the system’s components. Born David Corydon Walden on July 1, 1942, in Longview, Washington, he studied at the University of California, Berkeley, Diablo Valley College and San Francisco State University.
Walden began his career as a programmer at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory before joining BBN Technologies in 1967, where he became part of the team developing ARPANET packet-switching technology. He also contributed to IEEE Computer Society’s Annals of the History of Computing and was a member of the TeX Users Group.
