Dang Van Phuoc dead at age 90, Vietnamese-American photojournalist

Dang Van Phuoc, a Vietnamese-American photojournalist, died on May 23, 2026.

He was 90. Born in 1935 in a village near Quảng Ngãi Province in central Vietnam, he moved to Saigon as a boy and taught himself photography while volunteering at a film studio.

Phuoc joined the Associated Press in 1965 and covered the Vietnam War, earning a reputation that Horst Faas called a “secret weapon.” In 1968, he received a commendation from the U.S. Army’s 9th Infantry Division for carrying a wounded soldier through fire. He lost his right eye in a grenade blast near Da Nang in 1969.
