Born K. Velayudhan Nair in Thiruvananthapuram on April 22, 1935, he later adopted the name Crossbelt after the success of his second film, Cross Belt, in 1970.
He directed more than 40 Malayalam films and served as cinematographer on 10 others during a career that ran from 1968 to 1990. Veteran director Joshiy was among those who worked as an assistant director under him.
