Colette Sénami Agossou Houeto, the Beninese educator, feminist poet and politician, died on September 29, 2026, aged 87.
Born in Porto-Novo, she studied at the University of Strasbourg and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München before building a career in education, including serving as director of the National Institute of Training and Research into Education from 1977 to 1981. Houeto also published a volume of poetry in 1981 and was active in Adrien Houngbédji’s Democratic Renewal Party.
She later served as minister of primary and secondary education in Boni Yayi’s first government.
