Chung Ho-yong, a South Korean politician and army general, died on September 13, 2026, aged 94.
He served as minister of the interior and later as minister of defense in South Korea, and was described as one of the close friends of Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, both of whom went on to become president. Born in Taegu, in what was then Korea under Japanese rule, Chung studied at the Korea Military Academy, Kyeongbuk High School and Konkuk University.
He later worked at Kookmin University. His career also drew scrutiny in connection with the 1996 trial over his role in the suppression of the Gwangju Uprising, after which he was convicted of treason and later pardoned in 1997.
