Known as Chuck Mistretta, he earned a doctorate in high energy physics from Harvard University in 1968 before joining the University of Wisconsin–Madison faculty in 1971, where he turned his research toward medical imaging. He later held the J.
R. Cameron Professorship of Medical Physics and Radiology. Mistretta shared the 1998 J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine with Graeme Bydder, was elected a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2004, became a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2014, and received the Gray Medal from the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements in 2017.
