American architect Carl Abbott died October 9, 2026, aged 90.
A fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he was the youngest member of the original Sarasota School of Architecture. Born in Georgia in 1936, Abbott earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida before completing a master’s degree at Yale University, where he studied under architect Paul Rudolph.
His early professional work took him to London, where he worked with Richard Rogers and Norman Foster at TEAM 4, and then to New York, where he worked in the office of I.M. Pei. Abbott later founded his own practice in Sarasota, Florida, bringing his career back to the state where he would establish his independent work. The practice’s first design was the Weld Beach House in Boca Grande. In that project, Abbott explored geometry and sculptural forms through a clear concept shaped in direct response to the site. The house brought his work wider recognition in Florida and in national architectural publications. His path from university study through offices in London and New York to a Sarasota practice encompassed both collaborative work with established architects and the development of his own designs. The Weld Beach House marked an early expression of the geometric and sculptural approach described in accounts of his work, as well as the beginning of broader notice for his architecture.
