Born Candido Antônio José Francisco Mendes de Almeida in Rio de Janeiro, he became an academic, professor, sociologist, political scientist and essayist, and held degrees in law and philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, as well as a doctorate in law from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He remained rector of the Universidade Candido Mendes until his death.
During Brazil’s military regime, he moved with ease between left and right circles, sheltered political perseguidos during the government of Castelo Branco, and later became an ally of Golbery do Couto e Silva in discussions about founding a center for political studies. He was also among those who pushed the CNBB to speak more forcefully about torture in Brazil.
