Calvin Schofield Jr., an American Episcopalian bishop, died October 5, 2026, aged 93.
Known formally as Calvin Onderdonk Schofield Jr., he was born in Delhi, New York. He served as the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida from 1980 to 2000, a two-decade period in which the diocese expanded its ministries to Latino and Haitian communities.
His episcopacy also included the ordination of the diocese’s first female priest and the church’s recovery efforts after Hurricane Andrew. Schofield studied at Hobart College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1959, and pursued theological training at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University, where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1962. His years leading the Southeast Florida diocese encompassed both changes in its ministry and the response to a major regional disaster. The milestones of his tenure included the development of congregational outreach to Latino and Haitian people, the ordination of a woman to the priesthood in the diocese, and recovery from the hurricane. Those events marked his 1980–2000 service as the diocese’s bishop.
