Callixte Mbarushimana, a Rwandan computer scientist indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity, died October 4, 2026, aged 63.

Born in Ndusu, in Rwanda’s Ruhengeri area, on July 24, 1963, he joined the United Nations in 1992 and served in Angola and Kosovo. His UN employment lasted until 2001.

During the 1994 genocide, after international civilian staff had been evacuated, he was left responsible for supplies and support for Rwandan UN national staff who remained. He was later accused of participating in the genocide and of directing and taking part in the killing of 32 people, including UN employees he had been given responsibility to protect. The UN dismissed him in 2001; in 2004, he won a lawsuit seeking compensation for his dismissal. A separate ICC case concerned allegations of crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2009. The court indicted him on those charges on September 28, 2010. French authorities arrested him the following month, and he was transferred to the ICC in The Hague on January 25, 2011. On December 23 that year, the court ordered his release, finding insufficient evidence to prosecute him.
