Brian Large, the English opera director, died on May 23, 2026, at the age of 87.
He was known as one of the leading television directors specializing in opera and classical music. Born in London in 1939, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later at the University of London, where he earned doctorates in music and philosophy.
Large joined BBC2 in 1965 as a director with responsibility for music and opera and was appointed chief opera producer in 1970. He also wrote on Czech and Slavic opera, including works on Bedřich Smetana and Bohuslav Martinů.
