Bobby Baxter (footballer, born 1937) public figure dead at age 88

Robert Denholm Baxter, an English professional footballer who played for Darlington, Brighton & Hove Albion and Torquay United, died on January 2, 2026.

Born in Redcar, Yorkshire, in 1937, he was the son and namesake of Scotland and Middlesbrough footballer Bobby Baxter. He signed professionally with Darlington in November 1959, began as a forward and was the club’s top scorer for two seasons.

After making 64 league appearances and scoring 30 goals, he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in June 1961 and later also played for Torquay United. In September 2001, he returned to Plainmoor as a match summariser for BBC Radio.

Robert Denholm Baxter (4 February 1937 – December 2025) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Darlington, Brighton & Hove Albion and Torquay United. He was the son and namesake of Scotland and Middlesbrough footballer Bobby Baxter.
