The son of Bob Fontaine Sr., he worked in Major League Baseball scouting and player development, holding assignments with several clubs across a career that began in the 1970s. Fontaine scouted for the San Diego Padres from 1974 to 1980, then served as the Montreal Expos’ west coast scouting director in 1982.
From 1987 to 1999, he was scouting director for the California/Anaheim Angels, a post he held as the franchise’s name changed. He later moved into player development, serving as director of player development for the Chicago White Sox from 2001 to 2003. Fontaine became scouting director for the Seattle Mariners in 2004 and remained in that role through 2008. By 2014, he was part of Toronto’s professional scouting department, working for the Blue Jays. The book was published under that title, with its subtitle identifying Fontaine’s life in baseball as a “baseball gypsy.”
