Bernice Gottlieb, an American leader in the trans-racial adoption movement in the United States, died on August 25, 2026, aged 95.
Born Bernice Friedman on January 8, 1931, in the Bronx, she was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from New Utrecht High School in 1949. In 1968, before adoption agencies in the Northeast existed for that purpose, she traveled to South Korea seeking a child to adopt.
The following year, she and her husband, New York architect Ferdinand Gottlieb, became one of the early American non-Asian families to adopt a Korean child, and the first to do so from one of Korea’s major orphanages. Gottlieb later led a residential real estate firm and wrote several books, including a work on adoption.
