Born Barry Lynn Pearson in Geneseo, Illinois, he played college football at Northwestern University before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played from 1972 to 1973, and later the Kansas City Chiefs from 1974 to 1976. In his pro debut in 1972, Pearson was on the field for the Immaculate Reception and was the intended receiver on the play, though Terry Bradshaw ultimately threw to Frenchy Fuqua.
