Barry Luokkala, an American physicist and longtime Carnegie Mellon University faculty member, died on September 23, 2026, aged 72.
He spent his entire career at Carnegie Mellon, joining the university in 1980 and remaining there until his death. From 2001 to 2024, he served as director of undergraduate physics laboratories in the Department of Physics, and he later became an emeritus teaching professor.
Luokkala also directed the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences and received the university’s MCS Teaching Award.
