Baranov grew up with three siblings in a large family. His mother worked as a forensic expert, while his father, an agronomist who headed the regional agricultural administration, died three days after Baranov’s birth. After graduating from Ryazan Secondary School No. 34 in 1974, Baranov moved to Yaroslavl to study at the city’s theatre school, now the Yaroslavl State Theatre Institute. His teachers there included Valery Nelsky and Firs Shishigin, both People’s Artists of the USSR. His training in Yaroslavl preceded a career spanning stage and screen, with credits in films including the wartime drama Torpedo Bombers, Breakthrough and Alexander Sokurov’s Russian Ark.
