Born Jose Armando Vega in Hurley, New Mexico, he competed for the United States men’s national artistic gymnastics team and took part in eight events at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Vega attended Pennsylvania State University, where he represented the Penn State Nittany Lions men’s gymnastics team from 1956 through 1959, missing the 1958 season while touring Europe with gymnastics.
He won multiple NCAA championships, served as captain of the Penn State team in his final season in 1959, and later was a member of the Los Angeles Turners.
