Known by the nickname Az fanm Djok, she was recognized as Martinique’s woman of the year in 2019 for her activism. Berton chaired the Nasyon Matinik association, where she opposed land seizures, sargassum, pesticide use, and other threats to the island’s environment.
She was also a member of Assaupamar, an organization focused on environmental protection in Martinique. A leading opponent of chlordecone, she drew attention to cancer clusters and other illnesses on the island and in January 2021 helped organize a demonstration in Paris after a criminal case over the pesticide was dismissed.
