Ana Rita Sithole, a Mozambican politician and member of FRELIMO, died October 18, 2026.
She had served in the Assembly of the Republic since 2000, spending more than a quarter-century in Mozambique’s national legislature. In 2023, she became co-president, alongside Carlos Zorrinho, of the Parliamentary Assembly of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Organization-European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly.
In that leadership role, Sithole led work to renew the Cotonou Agreement. Her parliamentary career therefore encompassed both sustained service in Mozambique’s national assembly and a leadership position in a joint forum bringing together members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific organization and the European Union. The renewal of the Cotonou Agreement was a distinct part of her responsibilities in that forum. Her documented public work was centered on legislative service and international parliamentary engagement, while her membership in FRELIMO identified her political affiliation. The roles she held placed her in Mozambique’s Assembly of the Republic and, in 2023, in the co-presidency of the joint assembly. Her service in those bodies and her work on the agreement’s renewal formed the recorded milestones of her political career.
