Born António da Silva Alves Barbosa on December 24, 1931, in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, he became one of the country’s leading riders of his era. Barbosa won the Volta a Portugal in 1951, 1956 and 1958, finished third in 1955, and rode the Tour de France from 1956 to 1958 and again in 1960.
He also took a stage victory in the 1961 Vuelta a España. He died in his native Figueira da Foz at the age of 86.
