Born in Figueira da Foz on December 24, 1931, he became a prominent road racer and won the Volta a Portugal in 1951, 1956 and 1958, after placing third in 1955. Barbosa also competed in the Tour de France from 1956 to 1958 and again in 1960, and later added a stage victory in the 1961 Vuelta a España.
He died in the same town where he was born.
